Ant Infestation Myth-Busting Guide

12/10/2025

Myth #1: If I kill the ants I see, the problem’s solved.

Truth: You’ve only taken out the scouts. The real issue is the colony—often hidden in walls, soil, or under floors. Killing visible ants without baiting the colony just delays the inevitable.

Myth #2: Boiling water or vinegar down the drain will wipe them out.

Truth: It might feel satisfying, but it rarely reaches the nest. Ants are resilient and often nest far from where you see them. Surface treatments don’t solve structural infestations.

Myth #3: Ants only come for sugar.

Truth: They’re equal-opportunity scavengers. Grease, protein, pet food, and even dead insects are fair game. Cleanliness isn’t just about sweets—it’s about eliminating all food sources.

Myth #4: Peppermint oil alone will keep ants out.

Truth: Natural repellents like peppermint or cinnamon can disrupt trails, but they don’t eliminate colonies. Use them as part of a broader strategy—not a standalone fix.

Myth #5: If I don’t see ants, I don’t have a problem.

Truth: Ants are stealthy. They often explore at night or in hidden areas. Sticky traps and seasonal inspections help catch early signs before they become full-blown invasions.

Myth #6: Ant bait doesn’t work, it attracts more ants!

Truth: That’s the point. Bait draws ants in so they carry poison back to the colony. Seeing more ants temporarily means the bait is working. Patience pays off.

Myth #7: Mulch and plants near the house are harmless.

Truth: Vegetation touching your home acts like a bridge. Ants use branches, mulch, and leaf litter to bypass barriers. Keep greenery trimmed and mulch minimal near foundations.

Myth #8: Ants won’t bother pet food.

Truth: Pet bowls are prime targets. Ants love protein-rich kibble and water sources. Clean feeding areas and store food in sealed containers.

Myth #9: Trash is sealed, so I’m safe.

Truth: Even sealed bins can leak scent trails. Residue inside or around the bin attracts ants. Clean bins regularly and take out trash often.

Myth #10: Ants are just a nuisance, not a threat.

Truth: Some species damage structures, contaminate food, or bite. Carpenter ants, for example, tunnel through wood. If you find ants in your garden, you will almost always find aphids. Prevention isn’t just about comfort—it’s about protection.
